A leader in Leominster
sports community; 88 LEOMINSTER Elio D. Torcoletti, 88, of Leominster,
died Friday afternoon, May 9, 2008, at the Life Care Center of Leominster.
He was born on October 19, 1919, in Fitchburg, the son of Adolfo and
Caterina (Antonioni) Torcoletti. He had lived in Leominster most of his
life.
Mr. Torcoletti was an
outstanding member of the high school football team who later went on to
play for the Leominster Lions. After serving in the Army Air Corp during
WWII, Elio returned to his hometown and began steps to organize athletic
activities for young people. He helped organize the Little League in 1951
and went on to coach in the Babe Ruth League.
He founded and organized
the Pop Warner League, and served as commissioner of the North Central Pop
Warner. He also served as both a baseball umpire, and football official in
the leagues. He had been a longtime member of the Doyle Field Commission,
served on the Leominster Recreation Commission, and Athletic Advisor for
Leominster High School. Because of his service to the city, which had
covered more than 50 years, Elio was awarded and was very proud to have
received the "Citizen of the Year" award in 1996.
Elio had worked in
Shirley as a security guard for the Department of Youth Service, prior to
his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of
Leominster, and had served as a Past Grand Knight, a member to the
Leominster Lodge of Elks, and the American Legion Post 151.
He is survived by his
loving wife of 60 years, Mildred M. (O'Brien) Torcoletti; two sons, Edward
J. Torcoletti of Leominster, and David G. Torcoletti of Norwell; one
daughter, Catherine A. Torcoletti of Weymouth; two brothers Candido and
Robert Torcoletti; two grandchildren, Deric Long and Gina Torcoletti. He
was predeceased by a brother, Attilio Torcoletti, and a sister, Lavinia
Picucci.
A funeral service will
be held on Tuesday, May 13, from the Silas F. Richardson and Son, Funeral
Home, 106 West St., Leominster, with a 10 a.m. Mass in Our Lady of the
Lake Church, 1400 Main St., Leominster. Burial will follow in St. Bernard
Cemetery, Fitchburg. Calling hours are Monday evening from 5-8 p.m. in the
funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to either
